One problem that Plus bikes, and mountain bikes in general, have struggled with is the question: вЂњHow do we keep the rear end super short, but still have room for tyre, frame and chain ring all in that compact little zone around the drive side bottom bracket?вЂќ The removal of allowances for front derailleurs on many bikes over the last couple of seasons has helped - but clearances always walk a fine line with Plus bikes. The 29x3.0вЂќ rubber is the first thing that will grab the attention of riders and passers-by alike, but there are some very interesting details in this thing that you may not have ever seen before in a bike. The Stache is an interesting looking beast. We got our hands on the mid-spec alloy Stache 7 and got busy finding out how they went. With their Stache models, Trek aim to redefine the 29+ genre with a range of bikes that are super comfortable and roll extremely well - but handle like a trail bike should and donвЂ™t weigh a tonne. The options have remained slim since then however, mostly due to the lack of suspension fork options, and 29+ has been the domain of the bikepacker who had very little need for a light, nimble bike as long as it could roll through hell and back. In truth the 29+ category predates the rise of other Plus bikes by some years, first being brought to life by Surly in 2012 with their Krampus. If your axle has no writing on it, Ward says you have a few options. While youвЂ™re handling the axle, check to see if the end is cone-shaped or flat and measure the length from the base of the head to the end of the threads.

Cameron Ward at Brockton Cyclery in Toronto recommends first pulling out the thru axle and checking for printed numbers. Some thru axles have the thread pitch printed on the side (marked as TP). In this example, the axle is 12mm wide and the hub spacing is 142mm so we still need the tread pitch, axle length and axle seat type. The company offers a sheet you can print to find your thread pitch and axle length. Be warned, though it will point you towards the proper thru axle, it often wonвЂ™t give you all the information you need on your axle standard leaving you with no choice but to buy the companyвЂ™s product. Robert Axle Project has a tool to figure out what size thru axle you need.

It screws directly into the frame or fork, so the thru axle has to have the right distance between threads (thread pitch) as the bike. Thru axles vary in length, width, seat type (is the end cone-shaped or flat?) and thread pitch/length. That information is good, but itвЂ™s not all that we need. ItвЂ™ll look something like: 12Г—142 (width x hub spacing) sometimes written as 142Г—12, a popular road bike size.Д®xample of a road bikeвЂ™s spec information If youвЂ™re looking for your rear thru axle size to buy an adaptor for an indoor trainer youвЂ™ll want the вЂframeвЂ™ axle information, not the вЂforkвЂ™. Your thru axle standard will depend on your bikeвЂ™s manufacturer and your bikeвЂ™s intended use.Д«efore you do anything else, do a quick google of your bikeвЂ™s specs (make sure to specify the year). Why are there different sizes?ДЄs with many things in the cycling industry, thru axles are not standardized. Even if it somehow comes loose, your wheel wonвЂ™t detach the way it could with a quick release skewer and vertical dropouts. While a quick release skewer uses compression to hold the wheel in place, a thru axle will uses a thicker rod threaded into the frame to hold the wheel in place. They go in through one side of the fork/rear drop out, through the hub and screw into the other side of the fork/drop out (hence the name thru, or through, axle). Originally designed for downhill bikes, thru axles are rapidly taking the place of the classic quick release skewers. A quick release skewer is much thinner than a thru axle Why thru axles? But donвЂ™t worry, once you figure out what you need itвЂ™s (mostly) smooth sailing from there. If youвЂ™ve looked into new wheels or if youвЂ™ve even thought about connecting your thru axle bike with a trainer or a trailer youвЂ™ll know that the simple cylindrical component can cause some major headaches. Thru axles allow for easier and more consistant alignment, which is important for disc brakes which need to be properly aligned in a narrow calliper. From mountain to road bikes, disc brakes are quickly becoming the norm these days and with them comes the thru axle.
